Together with four universities and other partners, Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo is developing a handheld device for the on-site detection of nutrients. In short, we are creating smart sensor technology for fast, simple and cheap detection of vitamins in fruit and vegetables. This will provide SMEs with information about how to create healthier food crops and make food and health claims on these products to improve their product placement in the market.
For this project ‘Food Screening EMR’ we are looking for growers, farmers, importers, retailers and others who are interested in this smart sensor technology. That can be either by staying informed about our project on smart sensor technology, or by playing a more active role in the development. For example;
- growers that are interested in creating healthier food crops with innovative cultivation techniques.
- Or importers/retailers that are interested in selling fruit and vegetables with a higher dose of nutrients.
Additionally, we are searching for partners to explore the legal foundations for making food and health claims with us.
Together we generate valuable insights on how to implement this promising sensor technology into the agricultural value chain.
About the Food Screening EMR innovation project
This new smart sensor technology is developed within the Food Screening EMR innovation project aims at supporting local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)in the transition to a future-proof farming industry. The aim of this project is to provide enterprises with the newest insight into best practices and technological advances. We do this in a co-creation process between euregional farmers and food producers on the one hand and technological SMEs in the region and the key euregional universities on the other hand.
In this specific project, UM’s Sensor Engineering Department, lead partner of the project, is collaborating with three universities (Hasselt University, RWTH Aachen and University of Liège) and IMEC vzw.

Innovations in agri food that make the world a healthier and more sustainable place.
What we are looking for
For the Food Screening EMR innovation project we are looking for anyone who is interested in our smart sensor technology. For instance, growers, farmers, importers, retailers or others who want fast, simple and cheap detection of vitamins in food products.
We are looking for parties interested in:
- Measuring contents of their crops (fruit, vegetables etc.)
- Easy and quick measurement of vitamin C/B2 or other substances.
- Food and Health claims
- Future farming techniques
This can be in a passive role by staying informed about our Food Screening EMR project. Or this can develop into a more active role of which the exact form can be discussed.
Specifically we are looking for a user group to give feedback on the developments within the project. We need feedback on requirements and validation of the sensor technology for the usage of measuring contents in fruit and vegetables or any other crops.
What we offer
- Opportunity to stay up to date with the progress in this project including technology, future farming, and health claims pillars.
- Ask Questions/ give input from potential users of the technology on one or more of the pillars within the project
- What contents/substance measurements are you interested in?
- How and when would you use a certain technology device?
- Do you have any questions about food and health claims
- What future farming techniques do you use to steer contents in end products?
How does it work?
- Send in an one pager with a brief description of your company and why you are interested in Food Screening EMR innovation project.
- As soon as you have uploaded your onepager, you will receive a confirmation so that you know that we have received your one pager.
- Your pitch is only visible to Brightlands
- After the deadline, Brightlands will assess all onepagers individually and contact you for an brief introduction
